She was the queen of the curve, who created flowing transitions between art and architecture with her kinetic works from cement, glass and steel. This also applies to her last great work, the One Thousand Museum in Miami, that up-and-coming global city which is also regarded as the new playing field for international investors. The luxury 66 story residential tower at Biscayne Boulevard is still under construction and is one of the few skyscrapers of the recently deceased star architect.
Architectural flow
Born in 1950 in Baghdad, Zaha M. Hadid initially studied mathematics at the American University in Beirut and, subsequently, architecture at the Architectural Association School in London. After setting up her architectural office in the 1980s, she taught at the Architectural Association School and in 2004 received the Pritzker Architecture Prize, after numerous, well-known projects and exhibitions, such as the Guggenheim Museum in New York. This prize is regarded as the Nobel prize in architecture. According to Forbes, she thus became one of the “World’s 100 Most Powerful Women”.
The star architect, who passed away this year in Miami, made her great breakthrough with a fire station in Weil am Rhein, Germany. With the acute-angled roof and oblique walls, Hadid well and truly smashed the architectural rules. Nothing related to a commercial building for fire engines and soon the house no longer served its original purpose.
Zaha Hadid’s dream living space in Miami
In 2018 it should finally reach completion, the last great building of Zaha M. Hadid in Miami, the One Thousand Museum. From the outside, the building relates to a contemporary, flowing sculpture. This effect was achieved due to an exoskeleton, which winds around the building and creates the flowing effect. In dynamic contrast, is the crystalline facade and the exceptional private terraces. The outer shell consists of glass fiber reinforced concrete, with its 4800 individual components which are supposedly to have been delivered by ship from Dubai.
Smart technology is behind the flowing facade
Various sized flats, penthouses and a large penthouse, are for sale. The doormen and the concierge in the lobby, provide an excellent service, whilst a state-of-the-art security system provides for safety. The smart technology is also outstanding: The residents and guests are taken up to the flats in high-speed lifts and smart technology is also implemented inside the flat. For instance, the housing automation from Creston, enables the owners to have full control over light, heating, air conditioning, audio, video, windows and security. It’s possible to easily/meticulously adjust/control everything individually over touchscreen, tablet and smartphone.
The One Thousand Museum – a little more of everything
For the occupants, the One Thousand Museum also provides generously sized leisure facilities. With aquatic centre, wellness and spa facilities, a spacious fitness centre and a sky lounge, the One Thousand Museum offers its occupants many possible leisure pursuits. The exterior grounds, designed by the Swiss landscape architect Enzo Enea, and also the seemingly organic swim terrace, are additional highlights of this unusual tower. Outstanding, though, is the helicopter landing pad on the roof. So far, completely original for a residential building in Miami.
Following the artistic stars, the architectural stars are also now coming to Miami
The new prestigious building doesn’t, however, come on its own, but is part of a series of high standard projects, which is turning Miami into a large, modern building site. Here, architects such as the Israeli Asi Cymbal, focus on so-called trophy buildings, which come into being in collaboration with such renowned architects as Zaha M. Hadid, Herzog & de Meuron, Foster & Partners, or the Danish up-and-coming star, Bjarke Ingels from BIG. The 550 million dollar Miami-Project of the Argentinian Alan Faena, on Collins Avenue, is considered to be the most ambitious project, besides the One Thousand Building. The architectural stars Norman Foster and Rem Koolhaas are in charge of the drawings. Besides exclusive residential buildings, a luxury hotel, a Moulin-Rouge-Cabaret and residential accommodation for artists, should also come into being.
